      Retrieving (Then & Now)              Pointing/Retrieving-Gun Dog/"Gamer"

Taffey was retrieving to hand at less than
seven weeks old and at seven, she is now a
finished dog with multiple titles and still has a
wonderful future ahead of her.  What a great
journey it has been! She has a few things left
to do in terms of titles, but it's time to change
from the testing focus and to emphasize many
of the other dreams which now are to become
a reality…..a few litters of well bred pups that
just might allow others to experience a great
dog, hunting which she dearly loves plus the
mentoring of young KwickLabs ----- Kooly, her
  yellow "fireball" daughter......Daisy and now
  Gunny......the newest Kwick "Dustbucket".

In the early fall of 2005, on September 10th,
she passed the fourth HRC Finished hunt test
and earned her HRCH title.  On September
25th she got her fifth AKC Master Hunter pass
for the MH title. Since then she has spent
each fall and winter upland guiding and
  retrieving at Blonhaven's "Europeans".

The puppy that loved to retrieve and locked up
on a ten second, trembling, natural point before
she went home has now succeeded in passing
on her talents. The future may see Taffey's pups
doing some of the same things she has done.
She will continue to be an outstanding upland
guide dog spending quality time in the marsh,
woods and fields doing what she loves to do
 and excels at...........hunting.

Taffey has finished running hunt tests and will
spend a lot of time hunting, be my "test" dog
when training the younger KwickLabs, start
testing the waters in a few pointing "shoot-to-
retrieve" competitions and maybe even run a
few field trial qualifiers.  Taffey's first litter was
by FC Taylorlab Downtown Dusty Brown - the
Top Derby Dog of 2004 and second place WRC
finisher in 2005.  Those pups are doing quite
well with their new owners. In 2007, Taffey had
another pup by Dusty.  Time to relax and
 decide "what's next"!

There are "those days" which crop up every
once in awhile that seem to suggest drastic changes might be necessary.

Before doing anything in a rush, ask yourself a few questions...........Is what happened out of character? Was there some new distraction that may have created the problem? Have you done any previous training in the same area which
may have conflicted with the new setup?

Is a female due to come in heat soon? Has the
the dog's daily routine been upset recently? Are you using enough birds vs. bumpers? Is there a consistent balance in marks vs. blinds? Is a dog perceiving pressures that maybe you don't see?

Does the dog know the expectations?

Before pushing forward or backing off, try and figure out if it was just one of "those days" to forget or a serious issue. By taking the time to do
a thorough analysis, the correct decision is more
likely to occur. A plan with a sound rationale is better than a  quick reaction without much thought.
