- teal season starts, the last two years have been
outstanding.....this year
things "went south" early
Start
of 2010 Hunting Essay (Link)
afternoon - dropped motor off
at DNB Boats in Sabula, Iowa......to be checked out, the
initial check and recent issues with others was not
encouraging
Sept 5th early morning - drove
home and picked up 6 HP Sport Twin Johnson (spare motor),
back at duck camp later, planned duck hunt for
tomorrow.....weather forecast = "iffy"
Sept 6th early morning -
traveling with less equipment Daisy
and I headed south, soon there was
distant lightening, when we rounded the bend in the side
channel we were met with 3
foot rollers, not being "stupid", I turned around and called
it another day
note: cleaned up camp, loaded most of the "stuff" needed at
home and left
note: each dog ran two cold blinds off the bank behind the
trailer with Gunny
getting one extra plus three easy marks
Sept 7th slept in and did all the work that should have been
done last week....well some of it
Sept 8th motor "guy" called.....throttle cable came loose,
carburetor needed some minor
adjusting and the repair bill was only $48.....when the
worst....no motor was expected
note: scouted for geese....saw zero with no "signs" on the
ground, but did flush up
four mallards (made a note of that)
While looking way back in the past, I was reminded of this
excellent training information.
Julie’s
list –
responsiveness, retrieving, “birdiness”, focus & control
The performance of a dog is a function of these five
factors. Therefore, when any
one of these seems to be lacking, training must be presented
so as to focus on
improving the weakest "link". A well trained dog
requires balance.
Doing what a dog needs "in the moment" is the key.
Sept 9th pack for Friday's return to duck camp
Sept 10th morning - doctor's
appointment, leave on trip in the afternoon
Sept 11th-16th the lost days of Illinois teal hunting
- mostly spent in DR's offices
note: everything checked out OK....back to the hard work of
hunting

Sept 25th started "roading" for conditioning
Daisy, Kooly & Gunny went 1.2
miles at 10-12 mph
in the grassy margins around the bean field,
Taffey went the same distance
at 6 mph
note: each ran individually to maintain more control with
their excitement
Sept 26th repeated yesterday's "roading" routine, but went
1.4 miles.......cool in the low "sixties"
Sept 27th morning - all four "roaded"
1.4 miles
afternoon trained with Bob and his dog "Jack",
Gunny ran a set of eight BB
blinds
day off for Daisy, Taffey & Kooly
Sept 28th afternoon -
Gunny
ran eight 8 BB blinds - not
very enthused
Sept 29th morning -
Daisy, Kooly & Gunny "roaded"
2.2 miles at 12 mph, Taffey
went 1.6 miles at 8 mph
afternoon -
Gunny ran eight BB
blinds....not exactly impressive
Sept 30th Taffey, Daisy & Kooly
had the day off, Gunny ran five
"inline" singles (75-225) yards using
Dokkens (four ducks and a goose)
note: excellent "mo"
