Nov 1
walking baseball at the Square Pond - Taffey, Daisy and Kooly
note: all three just love this drill
Nov 2 (dusk) push/pull alternating sides with singles
in the back yard
Nov 3 (afternoon) waking baseball at the Square Pond
Nov 4 (dusk) two doubles with heeling to retrieve out
of order (yard)
Nov 5 (dusk) three singles, a cold blind and a poison
bird blind (yard)
Nov 6 (sunrise) Daisy - duck hunt on the Rock River -
the rest got the day off
note:
Daisy was super in the boat - quiet, patient and relaxed the vest helped, but she
was a little cold
and the only
retrieve she made was at the landing when we got
back,
my orange life vest got whipped out of the boat by the wind
after we had
beached = a lot of effort to get it was solved
by Daisy...............fetch = another
reason for FF!
note: Interceptor for all
Nov 7 (afternoon) Daisy, Kooly and Taffey = repeated Nov 5th
routine
Nov 8 day off except for Taffey - afternoon
duck hunt to Horicon Marsh
note: boat routine solidified - need to take a lot less "stuff"
note: Horicon Marsh Pictorial (Link)
Nov 9 (dusk) three singles in the back yard
for Daisy, Kooly and Taffey
Nov 10 (early morning) Daisy went on a
goose hunt to the corn field
(noon) went to Blonhaven Hunt Club - ran Daisy in area #3 = one hen
up, Taffey and Kooly
ran in area #7 = two hens and three rooster
note: the birds were running and very "spooky"
Nov 11 (morning) Daisy, Kooly and Taffey
ran two pattern blinds at Blonhaven Hunt Club.& Kooly
ran the tower shoot - picked up at least
30+ birds and made some really super retrieves,
especially after having
to use the gates in the fencing, got in a lot of blind work, too = he
does
this even when the shooting is going on and birds are dropping nearby
note: Taffey - duck hunt, Daisy - goose hunt &
Kooly - tower shoot (share the load)
note: I have to really watch Daisy in the
corn field. She was
continually picking at
and eating corn stalks during the goose
hunt on Thursday. Eventually, I resorted
to using the e-collar to
stop her. Sunday night, Daisy "hacked up" some big
chunks of
undigested stalks (not good & corn cobs are worse).
Nov 12 day off
Nov 13 (afternoon) three short singles in the
back yard for Daisy, Kooly and Taffey
Nov 14 (morning) Daisy - goose hunt at the Square
Pond = two geese by 8:30 am,
went to well
supply house and picked up another 10 bags of granular bentonite, had that down and
covered with clay by 10:00 am on the front
of the dam
note: Daisy - very quiet & patient in her hide, waited to be
sent for the each goose
note: did some practice with goose retrieving on land later at home
note: field goose hunt invite this Saturday - Daisy goes
note: next turn hunting is Taffey's

Nov 15 (afternoon) trained
at the Square Pond corn field - ran three long blinds
note: Taffey wanted to do her "scallop" queen routine, but she
couldn't get away with
it = just OK (compared to the other two)
note: Kooly ran nice long casts, but had trouble NOT squaring the
angled corn
rows = decent job
note: Daisy popped on the second corn entry with the longest
blind,
still only took three
whistles, lined the second one and drove
on into the second corn entry (across an
erosion strip) & on the
last blind = two whistles ------ very nice work
(late afternoon) drove the Blonhaven to run the dogs in some sorghum
note: Taffey was first - 45 minutes = one hen & two roosters with two
points and a wild
flush out the end of one section of cover
note: Kooly ran next - 45 minutes = one rooster and two quail, both
areas below his
eyes are bloody raw (clean up nicely and didn't
look that bad
note: Daisy just went out for a ten minute romp in the short cover near
the parking area
because not enough time left and she is going
goose hunting in the morning
Nov 16 (early morning) goose hunt at the Square Pond with Daisy =
similar setup as
two days ago,
but added three sleeper goose decoys and put five full
body
mallards up at the end of the
pond to focus the attention of the geese
note: much colder with frozen ground down near the pond and skim
ice out about 3-4
feet into the water
note: small flock came in about 8:20 am dropped two = one in the
water clean and the
other crashed into the corn field, Daisy
wanted the one in the water first, but
whistled her off that to
get the cripple (which died before she got there)
note: The goose in the water was banded
Daisy did a great job on
both geese.
grabbed them and never changed her grip all the
way to hand, the extra "front
yard" work showed
note: Daisy was really good in her hide!
note: "unbagged" 18 Lesser decoys at 11:00 am....."good" FeDex

Nov 17 (early morning) Daisy went on a goose
hunt - invited up to Wisconsin for a field
hunt - four
ducks "buzzed" over right at legal time, the the sky was
totally empty until we quit in a cold
drizzle at about 10:00 am, rumor has it
this was
the first "skunk" in this field.......ever
note: Daisy's first field hunt with a group this year - she was
good
Nov 18 day off
Nov 19 (morning) Daisy, Taffey and Kooly ran a set of pattern blinds
(Square Pond)
Nov 20 (afternoon) Daisy, Taffey and Kooly ran three long cold blinds in
the Square
Pond DTA corn field
Nov 21 (late morning) "roaded" 6 miles at the Square Pond DTA - went the
first 3 miles
at 15 mph & took
a brief water break, half of each mile is through the
harvested
corn field, finished the last
3 miles at 10-12 mph
note: right after we started the forecasted sleet and rain started - the
dogs
were cooled
off good by the weather and handled the 6 miles well
note: Daisy was again out front the whole way, Kooly was mostly out
front
and Taffey
paced herself - all were in good shape when we finished
note: Taffey found a dead "something" that probably got killed by the
corn
picker and
managed to roll in it, took her to the pond and threw her
four singles, then the short
trip home was just tolerable, put her in a
crate in the pool room to dry off some at
first, later using a Fragrant
Grooming spray plus some type of Fabreeze product
and rags she
was "good to go" for the house two hours later........whew!
Nov 22 day off - finally realize a lot of the plans for this season need
to be changed
Nov 23 afternoon guide job - worked the fields at the old Blonhaven Hunt
Club
note: Taffey had to hunt some of the toughest cover I've ever seen. The
sorghum was
extremely thick and the two inches of snow made
walking difficult. Taffey had
three choices - "bull" through it,
"antelope" over it or burrow under it. After about
an hour, raw
spots under and around her eyes began to show up. She hung in
there until the end and continued to dive into the cover looking for more birds.
From 12:30 - 4:00 pm she pounded the cover. When
we got home, I rinsed the
blood off the raw spots around her eyes
and covered the sores with an anti-biotic.
She was favoring her
right paw. The outside front pad had a small slip which
probably
was caused by a rock under the snow. After putting some Tuf-Foot
on it, Taffey was fed. She is sleeping soundly tonight. It will take
about three or
four days for her to recover from this first outing in
the sorghum. It happens
every year. The skin needs to toughen up.
note: At 3:00 pm, I decided to bring Kooly out to pressure the cover
more
and possibly
confuse any running pheasants. It seemed to make a
difference and they worked
together well. Only about a third of
the pheasants were pointed and the rest
were flushed. They had
the advantage with a maze of tunnels through the snow
covered
sorghum.
note: Kooly needs a refresher course in "giving" up a retrieved bird. He
was "on the iron".
note: Daisy did not hunt. The cover was too thick to be able to see
her interactions. There
was no need to create issues with clients in
the field. The only way of knowing
where the dogs were was to
watch to tops of the sorghum, and I know what Taffey
and Kooly
are doing without having to see them.
Daisy is still a work in progress.

Nov 24 day off
Nov 25 couch potato day - Daisy went to the vets for her yearly
checkup and shot boosters...weight =
55 pounds (increased food 2 weeks ago to three
cups)
Nov 26 (morning) goose hunt with Daisy - one of those "shoulda"
hunts - shoulda' set
up 50 yards
differently, shoulda' stayed in the blind longer, shoulda'
used
different shells.......Daisy was
super the other one was Duh! hunter
Nov 27 (morning) goose hunt with Daisy - last one on the pond as
the cold is going to
lock it up
tonight - good skim of ice on the east half and Daisy busted
through
that for a nice retrieve
of our fifth goose this year off the pond (only
one shoulda' today) - better shooting would
have resulted in two
geese.....still not
very adept at sitting up and shooting out of a ground
blind even though
today's setup was designed to maximize my "good side"
note: put big "looker" right next to me and a feeder at my feet to
distract
the "guests"
away from directly looking at the blind and hide, six
fully flocked lesser decoys
were setup to look like they were walking
toward us, a dozen Avery full body
mallards were placed the other
side of the pond to 1) distract the geese and keep
them from looking
at us and and 2) "push" them closer to our side of the pond
note: the geese
came in from the east (as planned) and wanted down
note: each day the look has been different - five days of hunting spread
out
over about
two weeks has just about exhausted the number of
"uneducated" groups that like
to use this pond, with it freezing over
the timing is just right, when the corn fields
close to the many roosts
in this area are "used up", this corn field will begin to
get active
note: the areas around Taffey's eyes are healing up quickly & her
paw
(slight slip on
right front) looks good, no more limping

Nov 28 - Dec 5 mostly couch potato
time, ice snow and cold
Interceptor (all four)
Dec 6 (afternoon) tower shoot at Blonhaven Hunt Club for Kooly - picked
up 35+ birds & was
really
on his game with the marking, ran some blinds with shots going off and other
birds fallen,
excellent focus
note: old scars from allergy fights bled some, but looked worse than
they
actually were
note: everyone else had the day off (stayed home - very cold and snow)
Dec 7 (afternoon) Taffey ran a guided hunt at Blonhaven - 22 bird
release, lots of snow with the
birds
holding tight meant lots of points clients shot fairly well, 20
bagged (shot at
about 30) Taffey
was very sharp and made some very nice retrieves
Dec 8-9 more snow and cold - dogs getting a good layoff
note: scouting has been almost a zero on geese until today - found some
Dec 10 (morning) setup in the corn field - no dogs (not sure of ice
situation on the pond) ready by
8:30 am and no geese until 10:06 am three in first bunch = got
one
(should have finished
out), two came in about 15 minutes later = should
have
waited for one more pass, waited
about 30 minutes and then about 12 came
in,
one shot and done
note: If I had taken two out of those first two small groups, the 12
would
have been
there tomorrow. arrrggh!
note: scouted the field later in the afternoon = at least 100 geese
feeding, major ice
storm forecast for tomorrow, this field is going to get hot
for awhile

Dec 11 massive winter storm = freezing
rain, sleet, and lots of ice.........not good with a
driveway
that goes downhill into the garage
note: geese all over the field today - couldn't really hunt
Dec 12 went hunting with Brian - cold, clear very crusty snow and the
geese were not flying
this
morning, aired the dogs at noon and since the van was already
loaded for
goose hunting
decided that the geese would fly this afternoon, 1:30 pm
in the
"regular" field = cold, clear
and not much breeze.......nothing moving
decided to quit
at 3:15 pm and walked back to the
ATV, ten geese worked down into the decoys
and I'm 300 yards away........arrggh! decided to
stick with the plan &
got tucked
back in the blind and at 4:15 pm got my goose, when picking
up two more small
"bunches" wanted in....maybe tomorrow....then again I'm tired
and cold
note: ice crusted snow too dangerous for a dog

"Long Day"
single goose |
Dec 13 goose hunt......went out too
late with geese in the field already, they flew off
set there the rest
of the afternoon and saw nothing
note: no dogs = too much ice
Dec 14 day off for the dogs - too much crusty ice afternoon goose
hunt = cold, but
four showed up late

Full Setup |

mallards |
Dec 15 more snow - day off for
everyone (especially the handler)
Dec 16 (morning) Taffey, Daisy and Kooly went to Blonhaven for a
tower shoot
Kooly is the designated
"Tower Dog" for now - he was just plain terrific
today - great marks, tough conditions (deep,
crusty snow with drifts &
cold)
note: 64 retrieves with several blinds and a few "search hunts"
note: last year I did not run him because the allergy issue caused him
to
have several
small sores on his lower legs which bled every time
he was in the field - this year
I decided to do what he would want.
He loves retrieving and the excitement. The
"issues" are a long
way from his heart, and they heal over quickly.
Dec 17-25 the snow, ice, wind and cold have shut things down - dogs
are going to "OB
school" in
the pool area - lots of room for stretching and review
Dec 25 Daisy suddenly developed a large swelling on her left side
along the ribs, vet
appointment
tomorrow at 2:30 pm
Dec 26 swelling has almost doubled in size overnight - Daisy
has eaten and aired
with no issues
note: Sonogram indicates probable infection, left for surgery to drain,
picked up a 6:45 pm,
wearing white cone, big drain sticking out
her left side and three bottles of meds,
drain to be removed
Saturday, Master Card took a hit of $550
(left

morning before vet |

next morning
before clean-up |

close-up |
Dec 27-28 Daisy is progressing well, the
drain area is a bit messy (but not bad), she
has adapted to
the cone collar without much of a problem, but totally
not
thrilled with the confinement
note: vet appointment for 10:00 tomorrow.
note: big thaw followed by lots of snow today
note: zero geese in "our" field for over two weeks, most have moved
out and the few
remaining seem to have very little pattern, it
may be over
Dec 29 Daisy's "tubes" were pulled out and the culture revealed the
present anti-biotic
treatment
remains appropriate - looking good
note: white cone off the three days (if all goes well)
(left

tubes out |
Dec 30 Daisy had the cone off today
for the short trips outside to air. She likes the
warm, moist towel
routine. The incision between the two two "holes" is
totally heeled (can't even see any scar).
The holes are still open a
little,
but the vet wanted them like that (for a few days) to let it heal
more
from
the inside out. The cone still has to remain on because she is very
compulsive
about licking her side.
note: There is a small area of skin which seems to have been irritated
by the clotting
blood (really no issue).
note: There is no sign of any deeper swelling, but there are two skin
lumps where the
tubes came out. These are actually more like
temporary scabs that will disappear
as the healing continues.
note: Everything looks good.........so far.

"warm towel" |

"healing" |
Dec 31 - Jan 8
Daisy surgery seems to have been a success, all the antibiotics have
been given
and there appears to be no swelling
because of all the snow training came to a standstill,
however the pool
room
has become a large OB training area - an off lead OB routine was
designed for Daisy, Kooly and Taffey with emphasis on precision and evolving to
only the
use of hand signals.....the skills are two sided heeling (backwards,
forwards
and pivoting),
remote sit (extended), remote down (extended), remote
drop
(bumper), remote leave it
(bumper), place boards, casting, lining
note: all three are having fun with it (even Kooly who hates drill work)
Jan 9 scouted for geese and for the first time in over three
weeks the pond has geese on it
and open
water, Daisy, Kooly & Taffey ran four blinds in the grassy area (out of
sight from the geese) Taffey
was really sharp, Kooly did a good job with a very
solid attitude, Daisy ran the first three really
well and then took off
on a pure
hunt mode on the fourth, brought her back to the line and she
popped at 30
yards which go her an immediately "no/back/nick/back" with cast to "de-pop"
Jan 10 My goose hunt plan was to be ready at 7:30 am ----- I was
ten minutes late. Eight geese
were
five minutes early. They came in hot and didn't even circle, they were
five feet off the water on
the other side of the pond when they saw me. They
kept right on going. I guessed wrong on
which side to put my
blind.
I
didn't think there was enough time to move, so I decided to let the next
bunch land in
the water
if they came in like the last. That way I would have time to
stand up and
shoot. They can't flare
away from me because of the tall pine trees
along the pond. It would be a 40 yard shot, but I
was
shooting 3" Hevi-Shot 2's. It was a good choice, about
dozen came in
hot just like the others. I
stood up and they scratched
for air. I picked
out the lead goose and when it dropped I swung
on another....two down....but neither
were dead.
Taffey
was waiting in the van because I wasn't comfortable with the poor cover. The
deep snow
was now gone after our unusually effective January thaw. It
had
flattened everything and the
"end of the season geese" are looking for any little
thing that's not
just right. Daisy has been the
"designated Goose dog". She's
almost
recovered from an
infection, but not ready for water.
Both
geese were in the water, and headed in two directions which would lead
to being
off the
property. I had four shells left. The distance was too far away,
sluicing didn't
have much of an
effect. Plus, the shells are over $2 apiece. After
trying, I was kind of glad there weren't anymore
(shells).
The ATV
was hidden close by and Taffey was fetched back quickly. The "easy" goose
was in
plain view up on a small finger of ice and flapping its wings.
It became
the "poison" goose. The
other was headed across the corn field in the
direction of a road and required a quick search.
Because of the
road, there was no way
Taffey would be sent on a blind. So we beat a quick
path through the
corn field.
I was
giving it a "stand-up look" and Taffey was in hunt mode.
There was no cover........and
no goose.
After
checking the waterway that feeds the pond, Taffey still wasn't showing any signs
of picking
up goose scent. So I scooted across the road to the
opposite ditch
and headed west....zero
traffic. About fifty yards later Taffey
hits a strong scent
trail and takes a hard right into the woods.
A goose is tackled about 15
yards in and
Taffey soon brings it out. We ducked across the road
back into the
corn field
and skirted the pond on the way back to the blind. The other crippled
goose
is now on the shoreline, "hunkered" down low and is pretending to look like a
flat rock.
Taffey and I take care of the "woods" goose near the blind.
Next,
Taffey is sent for the "poison" goose. She gets
there...................no goose! Before
I could
stop her she runs out on the little finger of ice that is near
the dam. I
whistle her to come back
just as she breaks through. She looks to me and
I give her a
hard right over. The ice is thinner
there and open water is only a
couple of yards
away. She is quickly into the open water, but
where is the goose? Did it dive
under the ice to escape?
Scanning the far shoreline, I spotted the goose in its "low in the
water" snake mode. I
whistle
"sit" Taffey and she takes a perfect angled cast right at the
goose. I could
tell by her wake she
saw it. When she gets about three yards away
from the goose,
it dives. I'm thinking this is not
going to be easy, but the goose
doesn't know Taffey
very well. On the fourth dive, Taffey snags
a wing. The goose breaks
loose and
dives again. The fifth time, Taffey was in the right spot and
nailed it.
After
she retrieved it to me, Taffey posed for a few "picaa". As I was
picking up
decoys..,..she
started looking for another goose......IN THE WATER. Wow!
Taffey is a bear.
The
whole sequence was a huge rush, and Taffey has given me another special day. I
think
I'll play this one over a few times. Two days left, so if this
it......what an
ending.
disclaimer: This
story became reality because of poor shooting.

Jan 11 -scouted today -
several groups worked the water, corn and grass all day
Jan 12 goose hunt - last day of the season = left early
and setup by 7:00 am, three
mallards were not
happy about our visit and flew off, setup put only
three
decoys & hid under the pine trees,
Kooly was on his first ever goose
hunt
note: the ATV was hidden under a bunch of pine branches that broke
off from recent ice
and snow storms
about thirty minutes later 12 geese circled overhead & made five
cautious
passes....then flew
off. The next bunch of 5 did the same thing. I
moved
Kooly's dog hide up closer to me and
picked up the 3 decoys. Two more
flocks
came in twenty minutes apart, and each wanted in.
A couple of passes and
they swooped down. Got one from each flock and we were done.
Kooly was
pretty excited when he sat waiting for me to get the camera out. He was
steady on
the second one even though it was moving around. It only had a
broken wing & I decided
Kooly could use the experience. This was a good
day. The "trio".......Daisy, Kooly and Taffey
have all had their turn hunting
geese
this 2nd season.......each did well.
