Aug 1
trained early at the Square Pond (It's going to be hot today!)
note: Daisy ran the split lining drill & then 5 cold blinds (zig-zag design) to
the trees
(needed her to carry longer casts and lines)
note: Kooly ran the split drill (did it so well, with good "mo", called it a day
for him)
note: Taffey ran the split drill and a solid session of walking baseball
Interceptor and Frontline Plus (all three)
Aug 2 day off = too hot & in the
morning, van dropped off for air conditioner re-charge
Aug 3 (morning) trained by running
the two pattern blinds at BT's (374 and 200 yards) then drove
to the Roscoe River Park and ran those two pattern blinds (189 and 164 yards)
note: Daisy had to be handled on all four (too much hunt and got into the "zig-zags")
note: Kooly ran them all quite well (couple of casts - minimal)
note: Taffey was exceptionally fast and precise (wow! - just started back)
Aug 4 trained at BT's in new area -
ran two sets of four "inlines" with remote wingers, primer
reports and mallards
note: Daisy ran last and did the best job on set # 1 (carried the line all the
way to the
longest mark), then had a small hunt, set #2 was very good
note: Kooly ran second....over ran the first and broke down short of the
longest, set #2
fell off the hill and had a small hunt of the longest
note: Taffey ran first.......did fine on the first three, but broke down early
on the longest,
ran second set really well

first set of "inlines" |

second set of "inlines" |
Aug 5
trained early at BT's ("stuff" to do later - birthday party/family reunion) -
ran the two
pattern blinds
note: Daisy had a "bad hair day" = ran the shorter pattern first and then she
"bugged" & "no go'ed" the long blind, got into a forcing argument which
resulted in some distant "no goes" and spinning, walked out and "explained"
to her that there were no choices on her part, ran it again less of a problem
and repeated it again with almost a resignation of "Ok, that was just a test."
note: Kooly and Taffey only ran the shorter one (no bumpers at the longest)
drove to Roscoe River Park and ran the two pattern blinds
note: no "arguments" from Daisy, but she didn't go hard
note: Kooly and Taffey were very fast and solid
Aug 6 trained at BT's in
a newly mowed area - two doubles (long/short) to work on the "easy"
cue followed by two cold blinds up the middle of the two non-conflicting doubles
(wide)
note: Daisy broke on the first "easy" cue and gave a "no-go" on the soft Daisy
release,
the new routine was confusing, on the second double - no problem, marked the
first double well, big hunt on the second double go-bird, ran two nice blinds
note: Kooly did everything well except had a big hunt on the second double
memory
note: Taffey crushed the doubles and ran some fast, nice blinds (she has not
missed
a single beat and appears to be in great shape)
note: 4+ inches of evening rain on top of saturated soil = lots of water
Aug 7 day off
- too hot & the humidity is "nasty"
Aug 8
(morning) trained at Square Pond (ton of rain & pond at least two feet higher) -
setup
two remote winger doubles, primer reports & mallards, then ran two singles
afterwards,
warm and humid, good breeze down the funnel formed by the adjacent corn fields,
the pond was higher than usual with a huge runoff from this week's rain (water
nice
and cool), parked in shade with cloud cover and fans made it very comfortable
for
the dogs, I was sweating like a "stuck hog", but repeated ATV runs to reload the
wingers provided some relief
note: Daisy did fine on everything but the long memory, popped, came back later
&
repeated that mark again later with no issues = still some carryover from the
pressure from two days ago, singles were really fast with good "mo"
note: Kooly had a minor problem digging out the long bird, too = looked good on
all the rest.....no noise and did selection on each double (memory bird 1st)
note: Taffey was sharp on each double (didn't run her on the singles)

Aug 9 since
Gunny has a 3:30 pm vet appointment to implant his Home Again microchip and
it is close to the Stoughton FT grounds = trained there - it is in the 80's and
the hunt test
Saturday will be warm so we did four remote winger walkups evenly spaced behind
trees and shrubs in corners of a 100 yards square, afterwards Daisy ran a water
single
note: the use of several walkups allows for duck calling and extended heeling
practice
note: Daisy plants her "butt" as soon as anything is in the air, worked on her
hearing
"Dog" because the AKC judge indicates "go ahead" with the test,
she was
really good on the walkups, single was not as visible as I
would have liked &
she went upwind, resulting in just what I didn't want,
big hunt in all the wrong
spots
& popping, repeated the mark at shorter
distance to cover up some of the
damage, will use some shackle ducks on
Friday to get her mind off the pressure
and relax a bit, clamping down on
line manners has impacted her marking
note: Kooly was "jacked" on the walkups so I made them "plop" really close, did
the backward heeling and changed sides, only needed to do the muzzle/quiet
correction a couple of times (he was wearing no collar and no heeling stick was
around) it was a good session = shackled ducks tomorrow should be interesting
Aug 10 went to Brian's to buy some mallards
& trained at BT's with Brian = bird boy, flyer and
diversion stations followed by an honor, came out later to run straight forward
cold blind
note:
Daisy was "amped" with no signs of any issues from this past week, crept a bit
asked her to re-heel, picked up the flyer (so excited didn't mark it all that
well),
jumped on the memory and did fine with the diversion, came back later and
lined the cold blind (one whistle right at the end when she was on top of it, she
sat and waited for permission to pick it up)
note: the three mallards were run as a triple with Kooly (flyer second & the
close in
diversion was the go bird, crept "a lot", whining & barking when asked to
re-heel,
Whiffle bat had little effect, put him up
& came back out after the
next dog (sans
bat), better & used backward heeling with "muzzle/quiet"
corrections = not a
whole lot better, but he did finally quiet down = even with
all the refocusing at
the line, he clearly knew where everything was, two
whistled the blind
drove to
the Square Pond - remote winger shackled duck on the water and a cold
blind
note: Kooly was first and the mallard lost his "schackledness" resulting in
Kooly
trying to swim faster than the duck, finally cornered him in the cattails, ran
a good blind = wow......is he ever "over the top" excited
note: Daisy did well on both the winger mark and the blind, the issues from
earlier
in the week have been corrected (birds are good)
brought out each dog to sit and watch a mallard walk around (clipped wing) in
front of
them, after sitting and watching, put up & Taffey came out and "swooped" up the
duck
note: Daisy was excited, but under control especially when the mallard suddenly
bolted toward Daisy & scooted right between her front legs, Daisy gave me a
look screaming "You've got to be kidding!", but she never tried to grab
the duck
note: Kooly was just barely able to handle
it & good thing he was wearing a collar
because there was a momentary sit issue
Aug 11 AKC Senior
Hunt test at Bong Recreational Area in Wisconsin with Badger Golden
Retriever Club (Daisy and Kooly)
left early, aired both at the Square Pond and ran three pattern blinds
note: Daisy had to be re-heeled in the first land series (crept) picked up the
marks
and lined the blind (pretty much out of control going to the line), on the water
series worse, but picked up the marks finally finished the day off by
breaking on the honor - not a good day for her
note: Kooly nailed the marks and three whistled the blind, but he was even worse
than Daisy at the line, called back for the water where he had a controlled
break on the flyer, since he was going to honor on lead didn't let him pick
up the flyer - he wasn't going to let me put the lead on him, it seemed like
a much longer ride home than usual
note: not sure why the two were so wired, but they can't run a test with the
present
behavior, seriously questioning the recent approaches to their training and
will take a week or two off to think about it, might just "road" both every day,
hunting season is not far off and titles will soon not be a priority, of course
these notes are for today........things change a great deal in the few days
after
a "bad" test weekend, on a another note at least we were consistent
Aug 12 using "The List" = Responsiveness,
Retrieving, Birdiness, Focus and Control the solution
can be developed
Since the issue is common to both Daisy and Kooly......it is not likely the dogs
(which I already knew)
1) Responsiveness - poor at tests & evidently weak at times in training
2) Retrieving - not an issue (really excellent)
3) Birdiness - probably way too high
4) Focus - not well defined (especially with behavior)
5) Control - mediocre when it counts (at tests with no collar or heeling stick)
Multifaceted Approach
A) redefine sit and heel standards (yard and in the field)
***not exactly clear about why I become a "potted plant" at tests***
B) re-establish control (quick release pinch collar at all times in training)
C) run test thinking of running a Junior (control at tests)
D) use "birdiness" to challenge all of the above (straight forward, simple
and close singles)
E) build and use a Johnny House (quail) - sit to flush for Kooly & hold point
for Daisy (and Taffey)
Aug 13 day
off, bought quick release pinch collar, added one link and it fits Kooly & Daisy
note: gave Kooly full Prednisone tablet as his itching was almost continuous at
the
hunt test, several red spots have flared up on his belly area (probably
the grass pollen from the hunt test area, tough allergy times)
Aug 14 (early
morning) free "roaded"
(ATV) Daisy, Kooly & Taffey three miles at 15 mph at
BT's
on the grass path, stopped for water, then did another mile at a leisurely 5 mph
to "cool" down, all three were in no stress and Daisy was out front the whole
time,
Taffey was cutting the corners
note:
sunny, 7 mph breeze at 74º with heavy dew on the shady side of the field
note: got a good start on the Johnny House
Aug 15
trained at BT's hay field with Brian Moyse (pro) - first set-up triple with a
check down
(easy cue) second bird with an inline memory after running a go bird first
note: Daisy had to deal with the "handling'easy cue" and worked her way
through it, used the "quick release" pinch collar at the line
note: Kooly had the same issue with the "easy cue"
note: Taffey was sharp
second set-up was a chair drill with four singles alternating so that every
other mark
was conflicting (one in line concept, other a long final bird tight to
a
shorter station
note: Daisy was sharp on these
note: Kooly did a good job too
note: since it was raining most of the morning, Taffey didn't run these to speed
things up some
the last set-up was a blind past the first station, next to a curve path down a
tree
line (down hill and then back up)
note: Daisy wanted to hunt, go on the wrong side of the station, follow the
path,
check out the wood and auto cast......not a pretty sight
note: Kooly's initial line not great, but he took a couple more casts &
was right on
note: brought Taffey out.....no collar - hunted, took poor casts, tried to go on
the
wrong side of the gunner station, scalloped & then proceeded to
auto-cast
(a lot), called her in & put her up, brought her back out with a
collar & pretty
much repeated what she did the first time, collar was
on & corrections had no
effect = thick neck fur and loose collar
score: Taffey 1 Trainer 0
note: got a lot more finished on the Johnny House (two
side walls and floor)
Aug 16 (early morning) "roaded" all three dogs....cool, heavy dew and overcast,
what
a very unusual morning for the middle of August
note: ran the first three miles at 18-20 miles per hour - no trouble and Daisy
was
out front the whole time, brief stop for water and a breather then another
two miles at a leisurely 6-8 mph through grassy cover, at one point Daisy
and Kooy converged on each other out of some chest high cover right in
front of me and went down in a pile, both got up and went on apparently
unhurt........however, this evening Daisy is lame on her right front, the pain
appears to be in the lower leg in the carpal area and obvious when flexing
it back, after walking a bit she loosens up, initial diagnosis is a bruise,
we'll see how she moves tomorrow....as of now no training for her
note: "Dremeled" each dog's nails
Aug 17 birthday number 67 today, trained at Bong Rec. Area in Wisconsin with Brian
ran three water singles in the Gravel Pond from white chair stations
note: checked Daisy at 2:00 am & zero signs of limping (no swelling or pain)

61º outside
note: Daisy headed for the second station on the first mark -
handled her back to
the correct line, second mark - good line, then popped & big hunt, last mark
got a "no-go" followed by a correction and then finished with a big, ugly hunt,
could be the extra pressure to be under more control or maybe the leg was
bothering her a little so will cut her some slack today (there was no outward
sign of any physical problem, but the pinch collar was giving her no possible
chances to forge to the line or move once there)
note: Kooly sat on a cold honor position and watched the first six dogs run, he
was
not happy with restrictions of the pinch collar and whined (a lot), then he was
put up for the day
note: Taffey came out to run the last mark just for some exercise....got a
"no-go" &
ended up with a big hunt with poor responses to handling
note: Wow! a training day to forget
Aug 18 trainer's day off

Aug 19 too bad it is raining........all day
worked on the Johnny House and ordered some
game bird watering nipples from a supplier in Texas
Aug 20 (morning) "roading" is not a good idea because the two areas
are too wet, went
to the Square Pond grassy area and ran all three dogs on a long thrown Walking
Baseball dril - focus on extended sits and long, accurate casts....afterwards
each
dog came out and ran four blinds (each one was at a tree to get them to look
out),
focus was 1) good initial line (routine), 2) extended sits and 3) accurate casts
note: Daisy was very good today and the extended sits made a huge difference
note: Kooly has always done this well and the longer sits produce better results
note: Taffey was very accurate and focusing on the routine seems to be the key
for dealing with her penchant to auto-cast, have to remember to run her
last so comparisons and being too critical with won't be an issue, taking a
too big of an angle back on a slight back cast still is Taffey's weak link
Aug 21 soggy and humid with no breeze and mud everywhere - day off
Aug 22 hot and humid - ran all three dogs off place boards in an honoring drill
(yard)
note: Taffey was the pick-up bird for Daisy and Kooly when they couldn't keep
their feet on the board
Aug 23 trained at Brian's - singles, with flat collar and restraining at the
line, afterwards
ran all three dogs on two blinds (old pattern blinds for Taffey
note: Daisy was tough, marked well and did a good job on the blinds (very good
"mo"), her "memory" for what "heel" means when excited - "sucks!"
note: Kooly was steady with only a "tiny" whine and did well on the blinds
note: Taffey did not run any marks and ran the blinds like she was pretty sure
where they were (couple years ago was when she ran them last)
Aug 24 ran three pattern blinds at the Square Pond with all three dogs -
exercise
appointment for Daisy for OFA of hips and elbows - Madison, Dr. Link at
2:30 PM
note: Daisy's hips are good to excellent (vet opinion) & elbows normal
Aug 25 aired dogs at the Square Pond at 5:00 am and drove 173 miles to Valders,
WI,
hunt test - Daisy and Kooly - Island View Retriever Club in Wisconsin,
took the
pup and Taffey, too
note: the focus was on going from the truck to the line, forging was the issue
note: Daisy a handful, learned a lot with being able to use a lead, she did a
wild, scary summersault on land when she hit a dig on the way to the
flyer, big hunt - then did fine on the next mark, water was better going
to the line improve and passed
note: Kooly was tough going to the line, but learned much about him, too
marking was exceptionally nice, no barking with just a few whines,
better going to the line and passed.....judge gave me a good hint on
the forging...besides stepping back when the dog forges, make the dog
sit to break the motion cycle
Aug 26 (morning) went training with a group near Kenosha worked on forging
from the van,
to the holding blind & finally to the line - huge progress with both
Daisy and Kooly
note: Daisy ran three land cold blinds first, then did two down the shore
water singles with a repeat of the holding blind work finished with a
fairly long water cold blind - nice job at the line and progress with the
forging and a solid honor - routine understood
note: Kooly did the two singles and learned got use to the anti-forging
routine, he wasn't asked to run the water blind
note: Taffey ran the water blind past a poison bird (very close) and did it
without much trouble - she is sharp
note: really didn't feel like going training this morning, but sure glad we did
Aug 27 (day off) for all three dogs - more rain around 11:30 am
Aug 28 (morning) trained at Brian's - ran two singles and worked on line manners
(from the
van to the line) Daisy & Kooly were "amped" and good progress was made
Aug 29 (morning) trained with Brian at BT's - ran two singles with focus on line
manners,
holding blind "rules" and steadiness at the line (very warm & humid)
note: Daisy still has way too much animation in the area of the van to the line,
marking is getting better when she is focused (not moving around)
note: Kooly is slowly beginning to get the message (noise is getting less)
Aug 30 (morning) trained at Brian's - ran 2 singles after an extended cold
honoring session
note: Daisy was taken on lead back and forth to the holding blind, while
and after each mark = focusing on reducing forging & re-establishing
the sit standard and re-defining what "heel" means
note: pretty much worked on the same thing with Kooly plus trying get some
consistent corrections in for whining
note: both dogs are beginning to acknowledge and understanding of "no bird"
note: both are still a handful!!!!
Aug 31 (non) trained at Bt's with Brian - ran two "inline" singles (mallards &
hidden gunners)
note: Daisy and Kooly worked mostly on "from the van to the line"
(stick corrections today)
note: Brian threw three singles for Taffey
Sept 1 AKC hunt test at Madison, WI - Daisy & Kooly both passed Junior Hunter
note: Daisy and Kooly were "high" today, tough getting from the van to the line,
once there did a great job
Sept 2 AKC hunt test at Madison, WI - Daisy passed Senior Hunter & Junior Hunter
note: Daisy was again "on the iron" for Junior, did well on test, first series
of
Senior - not much went right, had to re-heel, handled on first mark, small
hunt on second bird, lost her on the blind for a bit (behind some cover),
crept on the honor only 32 out of 56 called back for the second series,
switched up the routine from the van to the line A LOT and she got there
very calmly and did great in the second series = good walk-up (small creep),
dug out a very tough go bird, after an easy memory she ran a very nice
cold blind.....she needed to be really good in the second series to pass
note: walked away from the van like a "drunken sailor", changed directions
often, kept the leash loose and didn't say a word, pretty soon she gave up
forging because she couldn't figure out which way we were going, got to
first holding blind (a truck) and she started to eat grass......so I let her and
never said a word, went into the holding blind after an long water break
for the gunners and she never reacted until I took off the leash, without
the twenty minutes of getting pumped up she was "tons" better in the test
note: heard of some really top dogs that are given kibbles in the holding blind
and I
can't count on tasty grass all the time........so
note: Kooly
passed Junior Hunter test with ease, but he was a "bear" to the line,
got a bit "sticky" with the birds.....usually has a good mouth (really "high")
Sept 3 day off for everyone
Sept 4 (morning) trained at the Square Pond - four remote wingers set-up, Daisy
and Kooly
were walked off leash for almost 15 minutes all over the place, the focus was to
be
casual and be at heel with only soft spoken, calming control, eventually each
mark
was down as a casual whistle sit walkup Interceptor (for
all three)
note: Daisy heel eventually became quite calm and easy going, picked up each
mark and sat still at the "line"
note: Kooly did a long walk and had trouble keeping even with me for several
minutes and finally his stride became for relaxed, ran the first two marks
as singles with the walkup routine, sat solidly and didn't even whine, the
last two remote wingers were a walkup double...again he was relaxed
and quiet at the line, the marks were down the shore and he needed
handling to the correct line on the memory
note: BIG CHANGE IN ROUTINE - got to teach them how to be calm (and me too)
note: tightening the screws is not working and beginning to see that "roading"
is the wrong way to
prepare a "high" dog for a retriever test
Sept 5 (early morning) repeated yesterday's routine - 4 singles (different
positions) with ducks
note: Daisy was much more relaxed, very still at the line and excellent mouth
note: it took Kooly awhile to calm down, slightly "busy feet" on the first two,
no
noise, willing to backward heel and excellent mouth standards
note: this is the standard - calm and focused
Sept 6 (morning) trained at BT's with Anne W. - four remote wingers with
mallards and
primer reports, "around the horn" placement with the longest first and the
shortest
last, afterwards two cold blinds (one short and "tricky" - big terrain change
and the
other long up the middle of the singles field with a cross wind (dry pond bed
area)
note: total time getting off the van and "walking calmly" all over with
Daisy
was over 20 minutes.....she was relaxed, didn't move at the line, marked
really well and handled the birds perfectly, did a decent job on blinds
note: Kooly was a little more "on the iron" at first but settled down, spent at
least 20 minutes from the van to the line ("geez" that seems like a long
time at first.......but it does seem to not only calm the dog.........me too),
ran his singles like I would want him to (which is what this is all about),
his blinds were pretty good and his attitude was excellent
note: both "appear" to be relaxed and laid back......this is a weird feeling for
me to be running calm, focused dogs that have a lot of drive when ask
to "fire" on the release
.......of course it has been only three days, the
plan is to make this a long term routine that eventually will have a more
permanent effect. It is going to be difficult to stick to this routine when I
train in a group and not sure how to deal with it.
note: Kooly's backward heeling is so much easier to ask of him and he does
it without the anxiety and noise like before. Therefore, "adjusting" his
attitude and behavior to a more relaxed mode has eliminated the
"manic" noise issues (in training). With the next hunt test only a week
away it will be interesting to see if there is any noticeable change in
the "old ways". What was encouraging was the drastic difference Daisy
showed from the first series to the second last weekend when her
anxiety from the van to the line was not "fed".
note: The question that I am presently dealing with stems from mulling these
"events" over in my mind. Why did I get so "hung up" with "making" my
dogs relax instead of taking the time to show them how?
Sept 7 (afternoon) trained at the Square Pond - beautiful afternoon, ran 3
remote winger
singles with primer reports and mallards followed by a cold blind
note: Daisy walked for over 15 minutes off leash at heel with some sitting and
a little time in the holding blind, each single was done as a walkup with
whistled sits, really nice and calm the whole time and marked well, cold
blind was done with good control
note: Kooly was handled the same (walked slowly around for about 15 minutes)|
plus asked to backward heel a couple of times with zero vocalizations and
no real physical anxieties, did his blind under control after a poor initial
line where he got "sucked" to the Wood Duck house off to the right
note: Taffey helped me get the set-up together and did some impromptu swims,
her whining in the van was getting annoying so she had a close encounter
with a bark collar
note: this week was straight forward set-ups, low key approach, lots of time
developing a relaxing mode before running each session to avoid feeding
any anxieties, commands were very quiet (almost a whisper) & corrections
were low level e-collar nicks, it went well and established a standard,
Daisy & Kooly were consistently steady, quiet and focused.

Sept 8 Saturday AKC hunt tests -
Winnebago Retriever Club at Bong Recreational Area, WI
note: Daisy passed her 4th Senior test and 4th Junior test and titled in each
note: Kooly passed his 4th Junior test for a title and now has his Senior title
Sept 9 day
off for all three - work on Johnny House
Sept 10
(morning) "roaded"
- ATV free ran Taffey, Kooly and Daisy at BT's - did 4 miles at
10-12 mph & took a five minute water break, then did another 2 miles at the same
speed in knee high, light cover (about ½
the time) finished with a five minute walk to
cool down some, Daisy ended up hunting the adjacent cover for her "cool down" -
she
is in shape!, Kooly isn't far behind and Taffey will take about another week or
two
note: temperature = 57º,
nice breeze, cloudy with heavy dew (beat the rain)
Sept 11
(morning) "roaded" Taffey, Kooly and Daisy at BT's - did 4 miles at 10-12
mph & took a
five minute break, then did another 3 miles at the same speed (about 3 miles of
the
total distance was in cover which is knee high to chest high grasses
note: temperature = 52º,
stiff breeze, sunny with heavy dew
note: Daisy did it easily, Kooly seemed fine with it, but looked like it was
work
for Taffey, she didn't seem very tired, but was not running as hard as the
other two
(she knows how to pace herself and continually cuts corners)
Sept 12
(afternoon) "roaded" all three again, went 3 miles at 10 mph with about 1 mile
in deep
cover, rested for a few minutes and then went another 2 miles at the same, easy
pace
note: temperature = 61º,
no breeze, sunny and dry
note: right from the start all three seemed a little less energetic than
yesterday,
either tired or the +10º
had some effect on them..........in either case
immediately decide to make it an easier day and increase their food
tonight (more protein)
